Mafia (or Werewolf, or Whatever)

It has been suggested to me that perhaps getting a game of Mafia going would be ideal.

Rules will be hammered out later, but it's a basic hidden roles game: a minority of mafia members (who know each other's identities) attempt to pick off a majority of townsfolk (who do not know each other's identities).

There's usually a dedicated thread, and the ingame days are realtime. Each day the ref posts an update about what happened the previous night (who died, their role, other public info) and then the players begin discussing who to lynch and making formal votes in bold text. Once a certain time is hit, whoever has the most votes against them is killed and the ref reveals their role. The same goes for the night phase, night actions are made by PMing the ref before a certain cutoff time is hit.

Since its slower than in-person games and doesn't rely on facial gestures, there's more room for complex specialty roles and play based on arguing what is conveyed by given behavioral patterns in the game and overall meta.

I can probably ref it, though I'd have to to get a rundown on what sort of setup/roles to be including since I haven't done one in this format before.

This sounds interesting but I've never done one before and think it might be a better idea to see how one goes beforehand.

I'm in! I don't know the rules of Mafia though. I've played a live version of Werewolves before.

I'm in. I've played forum, IM, and live versions of mafia/werewolf. Forum has got to be the most complex though, due to the lengthened timeframe.

Give me some time and I can get you a rundown on basic roles and setup, but the best games I've played have involved heavy use of flavor in setting and roles so I'd suggest coming up with your own theme or setting and sort of stretching that over the framework of the game.

. . . actually, I guess I could ref the first game, or at least try to. I'd have to think up something, though.

The last time I played Mafia/WW was when I hosted a series of games on Tabletop Simulator. I'm actually quite excited to return to a forum-style format (which I have also hosted a couple of). I'm looking forward to it!

I personally enjoy playing as Village-sided 'blue' roles, but I always welcome the chance to gain experience on any side, and in any role. One of my favorites is the Doctor.

All right, updated the thread with everyone interested. We're currently at 8-9 players and a game master/ref/whichever. Do we want to start looking for a micro setup or wait for a few more people to join?

I think it wouldn't hurt to look over some 8-9 player setups. These are the minimum player amounts necessary, generally, to be able to run a well-functioning, albeit relatively simple, Mafia game.

I'd be surprised if we could wrangle more people in. Even if we could it might be better to keep them on the backburner for if folks need to drop out.
